Bio and Booking

Philippe Cohen Solal

For a decade and a half now the French producer, composer, DJ, and co-founder of the electronic tango group Gotan Project, Philippe Cohen Solal has been making his mark as an electronic music architect and self-taught composer. He began his career performing with several Parisian bands and working as a DJ at popular local radio stations before co-founding the Latin music-inspired groups Boyz from Brazil and Gotan Project in the late 1990s. He founded his own label ¡Ya Basta! in 1996. The label's avowed aim is to give free reign to its passion and vision which are infused with a mixture of genres.
His DJ-sets are like a journey through an exotical music wonderland. It is around 2 hours, and comes from the musical place of the Gotan Project, but revisited completely for the dancefloor (remixes, unreleased, mashups) and followed by a mix with a heavy latin connotation (nueva cumbia, moombahton, tribal Monterrey, tropical bass, house, nu-Brazil, global beats, trap, etc). Philippe takes you through some of the most interesting parts of the latest latin music discourse. You might call it dance music "al sabor latino" or latin sound influenced electronic music. Most importantly it is an exquisite party sound that comes with a truly special, positive vibe and is a welcome change for anyone who enjoys a bit of variety in electronic music. Check out his mix below to get an impression of Philippe Cohen Solal's vision of contemporary latin club sound.
This similar kind of mix could also be enhanced by visuals from director Prisca Lobjoy, the video-artist of Gotan Project. Also addable at certain precise moments in the show, locally casted expert tango dancers (1-2 couples) can intervene to make his show 'The last Tango from Paris".

Philippe has produced the new album Talé by Salif Keita, released in November 2012. Recently he produced a track with Haitian Erol Josue.
His latest musical project together with Mike Lindsay (Tunng) is the release of Henry J. Darger in May 2015. They have created new folk songs inspired by Henry Darger’s unpublished songs lyrics and writings.
